Omaha Poker - Play on the river

The size of bets on the last round, and the decision to call them, has much more to do with psychology than with probability. Is the big bet being made by someone who wants to bluff me into thinking they have a lock or by someone who has it and wants me to think that he is bluffing?

The best clue to unravelling all of this is to try and remember how the bettor has been acting in previous rounds. Ask did he raise or merely call before the exposure of the flop? What position was he in? Was it the flop, the turn, or the river that seemed to spark his interest? Was it credible for him to have called both before and after the flop with what he now seems to be implying he holds? What are his thoughts on the way I might act in such a situation?

Remember that in doing all of this you want you want to balance both your calling errors and your folding errors – not keeping them numerically equal but keeping equal their monetary value.

Keep in mind that you also know something about the way a particular opponent plays. Use this knowledge wisely. You cannot play mechanically at the showdown and come out a winner in the long run.
